Plasma toothbrush with an innovative electrode configuration

The technology comprises an innovative toothbrush that uses an integrated high-voltage electrode to generate a cold plasma at the bristles, thus combining mechanical cleaning with an antibacterial plasma effect.

Challenge

Healthy teeth are an important part of overall well-being and contribute to a positive appearance. Plaque, tartar and discoloration can accumulate in mouth and oral cavities despite thorough with regular oral hygiene with a toothbrush and dental floss. If not treated sufficiently, in addition to aesthetic effects, severe consequences such as dental caries and gum disease can result. Unlike home dental cleaning with a toothbrush and mouthwash, professional dental cleaning reaches even hard-to-reach areas such as between the teeth and along the gum line. This is crucial for effectively removing bacterial plaque before it hardens into tartar. In comparison to standard toothbrushes, electric toothbrushes can deliver an enormous high number of movements per minute, with the aim to loosen and remove plaque by a combination of rotation and oscillations.

Our Solution

The present invention comprises a toothbrush with an integrated high-voltage electrode that is coupled to the bristle filaments, thus generating a cold atmospheric plasma at the bristles. The electrode is connected via a conductor to a high-voltage generator. The generator produces a specific voltage, enabling a multitude of discharges between the bristle filaments and the tooth or gingival surface. The current and discharge location can be specifically limited, protecting both the user and the electronics.
