Efficient transfer of handwritten annotations from printed paper documents into electronic formats

The technology comprises methods and software for capture, processing and transfer of various types of handwritten annotations from printed paper documents into electronic document formats, whereby the transferred annotations are editable in the electronic format.

Challenge

In the modern working environment and in everyday life, paper documents are often digitized and made available as portable document format (PDF). Paper documents can contain handwritten annotations. Available mathematical models and algorithms can be useful to recognize, convert, and transfer handwritten annotations from printed paper documents to PDF, although there is potential for improvement in terms of recognition and transfer completeness, color accuracy and resolution. Well-known methods can reach their limits when it comes to processing different types of annotations (for example text, shapes, notes, highlights, figures and objects with different colors) simultaneously and efficiently. Moreover, the editing of annotations transferred to PDF can be restricted with known models and methods.

Our Solution

The present technology comprises a software module and process for digitizing annotations made on paper documents by enabling a precise capture, processing and transfer of handwritten or marked annotations into a digital and editable document, such as PDF. The technology uses advanced image processing, alignment, recognition and algorithmic techniques to facilitate interaction with physical, printed paper documents with a variety of annotation types such as text, notes, highlights, figures, drawings and shapes with different size and colors. It optimizes the transition to the digital world and into editable document formats. The documents can be processed, stored and shared between different users in offline or online mode.
