About us

MBM ScienceBridge GmbH evaluates, protects and commercializes inventions of higher education institutions and research facilities. It was founded as a private company and wholly owned subsidiary of the University of Göttingen Public Law Foundation in 2004.

We see our mission in the motivation of scientists to also look at their own research results from the perspective of an economically relevant invention and to report such to the employer as an employee invention.

In the case of promising inventions, we coordinate the application for an intellectual property right with external patent lawyers who are specialised in the relevant field

We subsequently present such inventions worldwide to companies in order to identify partners who are interested in developing the invention into a product and placing the product onto the market

Ordering Algae from the Culture Collection of Algae

The Culture Collection of Algae at the Georg-August-University Göttingen is one of the world's largest collections of living microscopic algae. Founded in 1954, the SAG collection today comprises around 2.250 strains (representing ca. 521 genera and 1202 species) from almost all evolutionary lineages of eucaryotic algae and prokaryotic cyanobacteria, mainly from freshwater or terrestrial habitats, but also marine algae and microscopic stages of some seaweeds are available. The Euglenophyta may form one speciality of the SAG collection because almost all genera (coloured and colourless taxa) of this relatively small group are represented here. The catalogue of the SAG shows all strains which are available with additional information such as locality, purity, culture conditions and references.

Our clients order algae cultures for the following applicants

  • Energy source (Biodiesel, Hydrogen, Biomass)
  • Pharmaceuticals (Carotenoids and Tocopherole as
    antioxidants, Zeaxanthin, DHA, EPA)
  • Nutritional value (as food, nutritional supplement – unsaturated
fatty acids, Iodine, vitamins and minerals)
  • Ecotoxicity tests (reference strains)
  • Pollution control (wastewater / air treatment, CO2-bioreactor)

A huge variety of valuable secondary compounds and their cost-efficient exploitation make algae very interesting and promising suppliers (cell factory) of renewable ressources and pharmaceutically important substances. As the service provider of the University of Göttingen, the MBM Sciencebridge takes care of the algae orders and inquiries and regulates the flow of an order from the contractual components to billing and accounting. For simplification, all cultures will be issued at the same price. In recent years, the most ordered cultures have been:Desmodesmus subspicatus, Raphidocelis subcapitata (formerly named Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata),Chlorella vulgaris, Navicula pelliculosa or Phaeodactylum tricornutum plus several Cyanobacteria as Synechococcus leopoliensisAnabaena flos-aquae and Arthrospira platensis(formerly named Spirulina).
