Combined surface and volume plasma generation for gas treatment

The technology comprises a modular, scalable electrode architecture for generating and selectively controlling surface and volume non-thermal dielectric barrier discharges for the treatment of flowing gases.

Challenge

Clean air and clean gases are of high importance for many industrial applications and processes. The purification of air with plasma can be used for germ inactivation and for cleaning of industrial exhaust air. The air to be treated is often passed through a discharge chamber, so that purification effects are achieved through a combination of plasma generation and surface discharge. In case of single-phase purification systems, a period can occur during which no plasma can ignite. Consequently, pollutants – especially at high air velocities – can pass through without plasma ignition and without any purification taking place. Generating the largest possible plasma volumes can be challenging by means of volume discharges, especially when high system stability is required in combination with high efficiency.

Our Solution

The present technology provides a dedicated combination of rod- or cable-shaped individual electrodes with ceramic multi-capillaries. In the gas-flow direction, the ceramic capillaries enclose the individual electrodes as a dielectric barrier and each form a paired electrode unit that can be electrically driven separately. Several such electrode pairs are combined with defined gas gaps, with the aim to form an overall electrode or plasma module. By selectively setting the phase relationship between the individual electrode pairs, the ratio of surface discharge to volume discharge, as well as the intensity of both discharge forms, can be adjusted. This allows the plasma source to be switched from a predominantly surface-near configuration to a volume-plasma configuration that penetrates the gas space more strongly.
